There are plenty of luxury resorts on Koh Samui with beautiful beaches, oversized villas and the obligatory infinity pool. What makes Kimpton Kitalay Samui different is that it does not seem particularly interested in behaving like a conventional luxury resort.
Instead, it has created something more relaxed, sociable and distinctly Samui: part sophisticated beach retreat, part contemporary island village, part serious food-and-drink destination, with enough family facilities to make it one of the island’s more convincing choices for travelling with children.

The resort also holds a One MICHELIN Key, awarded by the MICHELIN Guide to hotels judged to offer a very special stay.
That is a rather strong collection of credentials. But the more interesting question is why.
A really great location
Kimpton Kitalay occupies a beachfront position at Choeng Mon on the northeastern side of Koh Samui. This is one of its biggest advantages.
Choeng Mon is considerably more relaxed than Chaweng, yet it is not remote in the way some of Samui’s more secluded luxury resorts can be. The resort sits directly on Choeng Mon Beach, while Samui International Airport is only a short drive away. Fisherman’s Village, Big Buddha and other attractions are also within reasonable driving distance.
It is the sort of location that makes sense for travellers who want the best of both worlds.
You can spend the morning barefoot on the beach, return to the resort for lunch, swim all afternoon and have dinner without leaving the property. But if you want to explore Fisherman’s Village, visit temples, head into Chaweng or see more of the island, you are not trapped in an isolated resort bubble.
There is one practical caveat. This is still Koh Samui, and public transport is not Bangkok. Guests wanting to explore regularly will generally need taxis, ride-hailing, hotel transportation or a rental car. Recent guest reviews specifically mention needing taxis to get around.
For most resort holidays, however, that is hardly a deal-breaker. In fact, the relative calm is part of the appeal.

FishHouse is the signature beachfront restaurant and has been featured in the MICHELIN Guide. It focuses on seafood and European-inspired cooking, with the restaurant positioned directly beside the beach. MICHELIN highlights dishes including ceviche and black paella, while the resort describes the concept around fresh local seafood, catch-of-the-day dishes, cold seafood towers and premium meats.
FishHouse is arguably one of the resort’s most important assets because it makes dinner feel like an evening out rather than simply the convenient restaurant downstairs.
Then there is Boho Thai Lifestyle Café, which brings Thai cooking into a more contemporary lifestyle setting and also incorporates local art and handicrafts.

Kitalay’s luxury is not about chandeliers, hushed corridors and excessive ceremony.
It is about having a beautiful room with enough space to actually live in it, walking barefoot onto Choeng Mon Beach, swimming in a spectacular ocean-facing pool, drinking something cold in the afternoon, eating very well at night, knowing your children are properly entertained, and having staff who remember that hospitality is supposed to feel human.
For families, it is one of Samui’s most compelling luxury choices.
For couples, it is an excellent choice if you prefer lively luxury to complete seclusion, particularly if you choose one of the villas or a more private accommodation category.
And for anyone who wants a sophisticated Samui resort without the stiffness that can sometimes accompany five-star hospitality, Kimpton Kitalay deserves to be very high on the list.
